Turkic States Summit Opens in Ankara Ahead of Key Decisions

(MENAFN) The Organization of Turkic States (OTS) opened its Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Ankara on Thursday, launching preparations for the organization’s 13th summit, which is scheduled to take place over two days in the Turkish capital.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan chaired the gathering, diplomatic sources said. Foreign ministers representing the organization’s members also assembled for a group photograph before the meeting began.

The summit, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, will be hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan under the theme “Turkic Century: Unity in Language, Thought and Deed.”

Founded in 2009 as the Turkic Council, the organization adopted its current name at its eighth summit in Istanbul in 2021.

Its full members are Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Turkmenistan, Hungary, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and the Economic Cooperation Organization participate as observers.

In an announcement on Oct. 24, the OTS said the summit would gather the leaders of its member states, senior representatives from observer states, and the organization’s secretary general to “discuss the current state and future prospects of cooperation within the Organization,” alongside other matters.

The leaders are expected to assess progress in the OTS’ main areas of focus, with particular attention to “further strengthening unity and solidarity” among Turkic states. They will also consider ways to expand cooperation in line with the Turkic World Vision 2040.

The agenda includes the transfer of the organization’s chairmanship from Azerbaijan to Türkiye, as well as discussions on appointing a new secretary general and setting strategic priorities “for the forthcoming period.”

“The Heads of State are expected to adopt the Ankara Declaration, together with a number of decisions and documents aimed at deepening cooperation and further strengthening the institutional framework of the OTS,” it added.
