Italy Reviews Turkey’s Unmanned Surface Vehicles
Türkiye’s Rafnar boats, which operate fully autonomously or via remote control using advanced software developed in collaboration with local firms, are drawing interest from international clients. During the visit, the Italian delegation observed the vehicles in operation, while the Turkish company Havelsan demonstrated their full range of functionalities.
The GdF relies on continuous maritime surveillance to maintain a consistent presence in ports, along coasts, and in areas with heavy maritime traffic. In this context, unmanned systems are increasingly valuable, reducing safety risks for personnel, especially during prolonged or hazardous missions.
USVs can carry out patrol, inspection, and monitoring tasks at lower operating costs, enhancing overall efficiency.
They are also useful for tracking marine pollution, illegal waste disposal, and other environmental violations.
These technologies are designed to integrate with existing monitoring, communications, and decision-support systems, not to replace human operators but to augment their capabilities.
Fully autonomous and remotely operated Rafnar vessels can help the GdF achieve institutional objectives such as covering larger areas with fewer personnel, lowering medium-term operational expenses, improving safety for staff, and fulfilling maritime security and environmental responsibilities through digital solutions.
