Turkey Urges Diplomacy, Warns US Against Military Action on Iran
Speaking in a televised interview, Hakan Fidan highlighted growing regional anxiety as Washington increases its military presence in the Middle East amid strained relations with Tehran. He warned bluntly, “It’s wrong to start the war again.”
Despite sharp exchanges and mounting pressure between the two countries, Fidan said diplomacy is still a viable path forward, noting that Tehran has signaled openness to renewed talks. "Iran is ready to negotiate a nuclear file again," Fidan said.
The foreign minister argued that US policymakers should take a step-by-step approach when dealing with Iran, rather than attempting to resolve all disputes at once. He suggested prioritizing the nuclear issue before moving on to other areas of disagreement.
"My advice always to the American friends, close the files one by one with Iran. Start with nuclear, close it, then the others," he said. "If you put them as a package, all of them, it will be very difficult for our Iranian friends to digest and to really process it and to go through this."
Fidan added that piling demands together could also be counterproductive and damaging to Iran’s leadership internally. “And sometimes, it might seem humiliating for them. It will be very difficult to explain to not only themselves, but with the leadership.”
Looking beyond current tensions, Fidan said Iran has the potential to play a constructive and influential role in the Middle East, but only if it works to reassure its neighbors and reduce regional mistrust.
"They (Iranians) need to create trust in the region," he said. "They need to have attention to how they are perceived by the regional countries, because they are not going anywhere; we are not going anywhere."
He concluded by stressing that cooperation among Middle Eastern states is essential, regardless of political systems, ideological differences, or sectarian divides, emphasizing that stability depends on working together within the framework of existing nation-states.
