Turkey expresses readiness to take lead in Black Sea maritime security

(MENAFN) Türkiye is prepared, in principle, to take a leading role in Black Sea maritime security alongside partner nations, as part of post-war security guarantees following a mutually agreed peace settlement, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.

Following attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea on Nov. 28, Ankara reiterated warnings against any escalation threatening its coasts and the wider region. The sources stressed that only Russia and Ukraine have the authority to finalize any peace agreement, while Türkiye strongly supports negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

Since the war’s outbreak in February 2022, Türkiye has been instrumental in facilitating key initiatives, including the Black Sea Grain Initiative and prisoner exchanges, maintaining dialogue with both Ukraine and Russia and offering support throughout the peace process.

Regarding security guarantees under a future settlement, sources confirmed that Türkiye is ready to assume responsibilities and take a leading maritime role in the Black Sea with other partners.
