Erdogan discuss boosting defense industry with S. Korea’s leader
During a joint press conference, Erdogan noted that discussions also continue between the two countries’ relevant institutions on establishing a clean power plant. He described the memorandum of understanding signed earlier between the Korea Electric Power Corporation and the Turkish Nuclear Energy Corporation as an important milestone, adding that both sides share common ground on counterterrorism efforts.
Erdogan said the leaders reviewed collaboration across a wide range of fields, including trade, tourism, energy, defense, technology, and investment. He added that both countries agreed to maintain close coordination in international platforms such as the UN, the G20, and the cross-regional consultative group MIKTA.
Highlighting the growing importance of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, battery development, and renewable energy, Erdogan pointed to new agreements on wind power and cooperation in blood plasma technologies. He also welcomed Hyundai’s upcoming electric vehicle investment in Izmit and reiterated Türkiye’s support for Korean companies seeking opportunities in the country.
The Turkish president emphasized that Ankara and Seoul hold similar views on counterterrorism and noted ongoing joint defense projects, including work on the Altay tank.
Erdogan praised President Lee — who assumed office in June — as a leader who had overcome early challenges and earned broad respect in South Korea. He said he was pleased to host a South Korean presidential visit after many years, stressing that the trip has further strengthened ties between the two nations.
